Thanks to @Jonathan for building out the forums!

As Choose FI has done over the years, this is intended for military families of any country to ask questions and share knowledge.

For those of you I haven't met yet, I served for 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy’s submarine force and retired in 2002 at the age of 41. My spouse is a retired Navy Reservist. We reached financial independence in 1999 on a high savings rate. We’ve lived in Hawaii for over 36 years, and our daughter Carol was born & raised on Oahu. I spend my time on surfing, grandparenting, slow travel, writing, public speaking, reading, home improvement, personal-finance meetups, and more surfing. I donate all of my writing and speaking revenue to military-friendly charities because... it's the right thing to do with our financial independence.

I've published “The Military Guide To Financial Independence And Retirement.” Carol and I wrote "Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial Independence" through Choose FI Media.

Carol joined the Navy on a ROTC scholarship. She’s been stationed around the world on a destroyer and an aircraft carrier before moving to the Reserves and finishing her service obligation. She and her active-duty spouse reached their own financial independence on a high savings rate, and they’re raising their own money-savvy family! Our five-year-old granddaughter is the daughter we've warned our daughter about for decades.

Doug,

It’s great to see you here. I remember seeing a story about you in Money magazine back in the mid-2000s. I didn’t realize that I would be pursuing FI back then. What is your opinion about retiring early with a mortgage as long as all expenses (including the mortgage) fall below the 4% SWR?

I love your story and the books that you've written. I retired from the USAF in 2014. For about 8 years after retiring I stayed living closing to my last duty station. Our church would typically get a good number of visitors and new members from those who were newly assigned to the area, and I have given your "The Military Guide To Financial Independence And Retirement" as a gift to a few young lieutenants.

I recall having thought through the whole "retirement" concept in my latter years in the service. I knew that with a pension it would be possible to "fully" retire "before 65" and in my head I had that target set at around 55. Then in my last year before retiring, a fellow officer told me about Mr. Money Mustache. That fairly well blew my mind. I worked full time for 5 years post-retirement (I had a specific professional objective I wanted to accomplish) and after that I stepped away from full-time work. (I considered quitting work altogether, but I am one of those fortunate souls whose work and hobbies have a huge amount of overlap. Continuing to work a little bit affords me the benefit that people hear about my work and then they bring me the interesting problems to solve; I don't have to go hunting down the problems for myself.)

I did eventually learn about "The Military Guide To Financial Independence And Retirement", but my recollection is that it was via Choose FI (so it must have been around 2016 or 2017 that I learned about it). By that point I realized that I mostly stumbled on all the "right things", but it was still nice to know that there was a resource I could pass along to young servicemembers that would help point them along the right path.

i'm a fan and have followed you in many forums. Read your book. I’m a recently retired Air Force guy. Now back home in LCOL area and working as a federal employee. Plan is 7 more years to get kids out of school and house paid off. Then to retire fully at 54.
