457 rollover

Hello,

I will be leaving a teaching career shortly after this semester. I have money in a 457 retirement account which I can use to draw on after I leave my employer. I am pretty sure I know the answer but want to be certain that I should leave the money in the 457 custodian rather than roll it over so I have the ability to withdraw earlier than 59 years old.

Thanks

If you have multiple 457s from different past employers, you may be able to roll them into the one with the best investment options. But only explore this option (if it applies) where its 457 to 457 with the same tax treatment so as not to trigger a single large pre-tax to roth conversion.

Basically, you are correct. The main/only reason to consider rolling the 457 into something like a Traditional IRA, 401(k), or similar would be if the investment choices and/or account fees in the 457 are simply so awful, and you are more or less completely certain that you won't need/want access to the money prior to age 59.5, that rolling over would result markedly better investment performance over that time horizon.

Otherwise, yeah, that ability to access the funds at any time is pretty powerful, and not something to give up without a really good reason.
