What I'm Reading, Watching, Playing

Reading: After listening to a great episode of Dr. Peter Attia’s podcast with Ashley Mason, Ph.D. on ‘Overcoming insomnia: improving sleep hygiene and treating disordered sleep with CBT-I’ (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia), I picked up the following workbook:

Quiet Your Mind & Get to Sleep’ that was highly recommended in the episode.

Dr. Mason suggests that 5-10% of the population suffers from insomnia at any given point and that it is incredibly solvable with a series of behavioral steps.

I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night for a number of months now and struggling to get back to sleep and I believe this CBT-I workbook will help significantly.

Watching: My all-time favorite show (other than The West Wing), Survivor, is back for Season 48 on CBS and the season is in full swing.

I thought Season 47 was one of the best in years, and I have hope that the Season 48 cast will come through with some great gameplay to try to live up to the prior season!

This show is as good as ever and I highly recommend it.

I also recently loved ‘The Life List’ on Netflix. I’m a lifelong fan of romantic dramas and comedies and this one hits on all counts.

One of the best movies I’ve watched in many years!

Playing: My daughters and I have been on a ‘Ticket to Ride’ kick lately and they just got the expansion United Kingdom set, so we’ve played that a number of times lately.

I like how each expansion set adds some nuance or complexity to the original version and this UK version is no exception: There are now ‘technological advancements’ you have to purchase to be able to access different countries in the UK, so there’s much more strategy than the standard Ticket to Ride game.

As you’re reading this, I’m actually in the UK and just took a train from London to Edinburgh, so this was fun timing to be able to write about!

What is Truly Risky on the Path to FI?

I just listened to ChooseFI Episode 539 with Katie & Alan Donegan and a few quotes absolutely jumped out to me.

Katie quoted Carl Jensen from 1500 Days:

People are scared that they are going to run out of money, when actually they should be more scared they are going to run out of life.

Alan had this wonderful quote:

I always had this theory of 'you can choose your risk.' Risk is inherent, there's always a risk. But you get to decide which one it is. Do you want to risk running out of life, do you want to risk running out of money, do you want to risk running out of working time. You can choose your risk, the question is which one do you want?
