Does anyone have thoughts about your kids' college and retiring early?

We were thinking of using our brokerage account to fund the gap between early retirement (like age 51 or so, in 4-6 years) and when we're allowed to take disbursements, but brokerage accounts are heavily looked at on the FAFSA - like it would eat a quarter of our funds and cut us out of the new programs for free state college for low/moderate income earners. We're already maxing out IRAs and 401Ks etc. Maybe it makes the most sense for him to take out student loans and we help him pay them? Is there some vehicle I'm not thinking of? He's only entering grade 5 now, but I'm a professor with access to tuition/fee waivers at network colleges, so I'm wondering if it's worth staying just for that. Either way, I have to plan my career accordingly ๐Ÿ˜Š Thank you for your wisdom!

I forget what the current threshold is, but if your income Is below a certain number, they donโ€™t even ask for asset information - maybe 60k? So if you have enough in savings to cover the difference between actual needs, or sell brokerage but capital gains donโ€™t push you over, you may be avoid including the account all together. However, I think a lot of private schools use a different financial application, which this does not work for.

Back when I used Reddit, there was a user in the /financialindependence forum that highlighted this technique and he gave annual updates when he applied for aid each year.

So I read that this stopped in 2025, and now it's just if you're on a public program like food stamps they don't look at your assets (but Food stamps looks at your assets anyway). But I'll take a look at the post.

Here is the Reddit thread you mentioned. I found it to be extremely informative and helpful.
