One conversation stopped host Ginger in her tracks: Frank Vasquez's simple rule about only traveling when there's someone meaningful at the destination. It wasn't revolutionary advice—just an offhand comment—but weeks later, she's still thinking about it, questioning her own choices. That's the hallmark of a truly sticky idea.

As the year winds down, Brad and Ginger reflect on which guest insights lodged themselves in memory and refused to leave. This mashup revisits standout moments from multiple episodes—covering budgeting philosophy, the seasons-of-life approach to spending, generosity in the FI community, and the limiting beliefs that keep people stuck—all filtered through the lens of what actually changed how the hosts think and act.

Would love to hear others’ memories of the show this year- what stuck with you, or has you thinking another way, or inspired you to take action?

Hi Ginger! What stuck with me was:

  1. In a literal sense, the Rebelutionaries "Compounding" song. Can't get it out of my head.
  2. Talking about divorce. Obviously I'm crushed that Brad went through that, but it made me realize that it's something that's never been really talked about in the personal finance world from a financial independence perspective, despite it being (sadly) a really common thing. I've been catching up with Money with Katie and she has an episode on prenups that made me feel the same way. I think there's a lot of these "unusual" or slightly taboo circumstances that could really benefit from more of the ChooseFI perspective. Like, off the top of my head: you're FI, but your adult kid has to move back home. Or, you get audited by the FBI. Or, you have an elderly or unwell person you have to care for (this is my situation and it colors how I approach FI). Or you're an immigrant who is the first in your family to ever make money. I think there's a bias in the Fi world towards white people from stable Western nuclear family households and we're leaving out a lot of people's (not uncommon) situations.
  3. I agree that the whole "middle class trap" thing is not a serious concern, but I think we should reframe it. Like...for the case of money being locked up in pre-tax vehicles I think it IS a real thing, and it IS a trap, it's just one that you can escape from relatively easily if you know how (SEPP, conversion ladder, etc). For the case of money being locked up in a house, the trap was thinking that your home is an investment, and that one you can't really get out of easily.
  4. I've always wanted to ask Brad this, but WHY does he hate the term "taxable brokerage" so much?? It's fine. Let it go.

I loved the episode with Emily + Emily that y'all referenced in today's episode. My husband and I will FIRE in June and begin slow traveling around the US and Canada, which means we'll be leaving Charlotte. I've lived here on and off since 1993, and my husband has lived here since the early 2000's, so it is bittersweet. I made him a local adventures list of places in Charlotte that have been important to us, so we can revisit those in our last six months here as a Christmas gift. It's now hanging on the fridge- any time we have a spare Saturday or afternoon, we'll pick one! Thanks for all of the great content, and for this great site. Happy New Year!

I recently discovered the FIRE concept and much to my surprise, I’m only a few years from RE. It was something I had never considered and now I often find myself thinking, I can do (fill in the blank) when I retire. The episode with Katie and Alan really encouraged taking action with specific steps towards achieving a goal. It’s been lingering in the back of my mind nudging me to take more action now!
