Brad’s flexibility routine.

Brad’s flexibility routine.

During Brad’s recent conversation with Tim Ferris, he mentioned that in his younger years as a soccer player he found himself to be “athletic, but inflexible” (to paraphrase). He said he instituted a regimen in his downtime (such as watching TV) where he “sat on the floor” and used a “lacrosse ball” to do daily stretching exercises. He now considers himself as probably in the “top 5 percentile” of flexibility for his age.

I find myself in a very similar predicament, wherein I am highly active and relatively athletic, but have extremely limited flexibility. I can barely touch my toes or cross my left leg over the right.

Is anyone familiar with the routine that Brad used? Is this something that he’s mentioned before? Is this something taken from Tim Ferris’s “4 Hour Body”?

I would love to give it a try.

Great question and this isn't really something I've talked about before! I wish I had a set routine, but it was just much less formal than that. Sitting on the floor itself was huge. I would look up hip stretches and for hamstrings I would do something like a "good morning" so you're activating glutes and hamstrings. This is akin to a deadlift if you're familiar with that. I would do yoga flows and just try to find different positions and end ranges and lean into them.

Tim and I mentioned Kelly Starrett and I would check him out. He has multiple great books like "becoming a supple leopard", "built to move" and "ready to run" that'll give you a ton of things to do.

All in all, just get on the floor and spend the time! You can get things like a lacrosse ball and a foam roller as well. Super cheap and well worth it

If you are interested in this subject, I would suggest the book, "Move Your DNA," by Katie Bowman. It includes a lot of "why" as well as a lot of "how," and I found it very helpful.
