Private Health Insurance, etc. As we begin really planning into moving abroad full time, the elephant in the room always seems to be healthcare. We will retire in advance of 65 (targeting 50), and we will need to go some other alternative than Medicare. How have you bridged the gap? What’s different, same, or unique to the experience? What lessons would you want to share to yourself starting the process all over again? Sp spickarski 41 seconds ago 9 Share
The Finances of Travelling the World for 7 Months My wife and I just got back from a 7 month career break to take a trip around the world! I wrote up a blog post going over a lot of the finances surrounding the trip and though people might be interested! Estimating cost of living in new location I'm a US citizen exploring the option to live in a lower cost of living location. Finding living costs to calculate an alternative "expat financial independence number" or EFI is tricky, since I don't live in these places yet, so I can only estimate. I've used Numbeo a lot, and asked for help from AI. Are there any other ways to calculate cost of living you'd recommend? EA Erick Arnell 2 months ago 9 Share
Untitled Thread Hi, I am preparing to kickoff my sabattical with a trip to Europe. I am just testing locations to see where and if I'd like to move abroad, or possibly just have a second home in another country. However, I am just spending two weeks in Europe for starters and have a question about phone/data plans. I will be visiting the UK, France, and Germany. I have Total Wireless by Verizon and from what I can tell, it's going to be a challenge to figure out how to use their clunky app for calls and data wh... St Stellar 2 months ago 7 Share
Untitled Thread How can I meet up with local FI-minded people when I'm traveling? I can't find a better place on the forums to ask this (or a better topic in the dropdown), but it would be great if I could ask in a local group or something if anyone wants to get together and chat. I'm guessing that this is not a good reason to apply to the local group, especially if I'm only there a few days, and asking in the global ChooseFI FB group seems excessive. For context, I'm currently in Glasgow, Scotland. It doesn't... Ha Happyjolteon 2 months ago 6 Share
Financial Advisors for ExpatFIRE Hi all, Glad this group exists! I'm currently working on my ExpatFIRE goal. I would like to speak to someone who is a financial advisor for moving to Canada and/or the UK to understand the financial and tax implications of moving. Bonus points if there are advisors/groups who understand the legal documentation that's needed. Anyone have any recommendations from people they have used in the past? Travel Insurance Recommendations For 6-9 Months Of Travel I'm taking time with my family (wife and two kids under 3) to travel around the US and Internationally over the next 6-9 months. I am trying to decide whether or not to get travel insurance or international medical insurance. I've seen that you can buy travel insurance from companies for each trip you take but I don't want to deal with buying multiple plans because we will be adding destinations as we go. Are there policies that are general for this type of situation? How did you all handle medi... Sr SrikiFI 3 months ago 7 Share
Mexico Residency - Temporary vs. Permanent Residency My partner and I became fully nomadic in 2022, and we’re in the process of setting up residency in Mexico to diversify our options — for tax strategy, travel flexibility, and long-term planning. We just completed the consulate portion in Washington, DC. Despite meeting the asset thresholds for permanent residency many times over, they required us to apply for *temporary* residency because we don’t have a formal pension. They wouldn’t accept documentation of regular investment withdrawals — they... Wa wanderingstacey 3 months ago 5 Share
I'll kick this forum off! Just wanted to say hi. Although I am not a full-time nomad, I am working toward that goal. My home base is Minnesota, but I am currently in Arizona for the summer. Right now I work Sept-May at a school with summers off to travel and housesit. I love connecting with other Nomads to learn the options and possibilities. Tr TravelGirl84 3 months ago 24 Share
