401k investment transition as get closer to FI

401k investment transition as get closer to FI

Hi, I am currently invested in 100% equities in my 401k, but would like to transition to more of a risk parity type portfolio as I get closer to FI. I am currently about 10 yrs away from withdrawing funds. I am limited by the funds available. There are a lot of TRP target date funds, with some of those more bond heavy and focused on income. Some of the more conservative TRP funds have about a 6% annual growth since inception, but have about a 17% drawdown period when I entered them on portfoliovisualizer.com Is that an acceptable range?

There are also the large/mid/small cap funds, as well as Vanguard Index Funds- S+P 500 ( what I am in currently), small/mid cap index, and INT index. There are a couple more than that, like the PIMCO INCOME bond fund (PIMIX), but the expense ratio is .86% All the TRP funds are .26%

I would copy the screenshot of the funds list, but this site doesn't seem to let me. Any thoughts on that?

Any guidance on my original question would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ian

I was 100% equities in my 401k/IRA accounts for a very long time. Because I’m under 2 years away from retirement and planning to use rule of 55 to remove from my current employer without penalty, I have recently been doing some dollar cost averaging into bond fund for the amount to cover until I’m 59.5 and will be able to tap IRA and previous employer’s retirement accounts without penalty. (Those are still 100% equities, but I have other savings as well that aren’t in retirement accounts)

Please please go listen to risk parity radio. PIMIX is not the bond fund you’re looking for. Also need to look at all of your investment accounts as one. But yes you probably need to move away from 100% equities. If limited other accounts than you’ll be limited until you stop working and can switch out.
