Choose FI: FI Plan Tool + Planning for Large Lump Sum LTC

Choose FI: FI Plan Tool + Planning for Large Lump Sum LTC

Hello all. This is my first post, so please be kind!

I used the FI Plan tool provided. However, I don't know how to account for a key aspect.

I have decided to plan & set aside $400K for likely future (self-funded) LTC. However, I don't know how to get the FI Plan Tool to include this. Ideas?

For context, I am single, no kids, so I need to fully plan to take care of myself. Hopefully, by aging in place. However, I experienced having to move my mother into a CCRC. Luckily, her upfront buy-in wasn't horrible, but I expect mine will be.

My BFF (from college) and I share a house, so I don't want to plan to just sell the house to pay for my own LTC. I look forward to your expertise!

What a cool story! I've dug into the FI tool a bit and I don't think it has this functionality but Jonathan is super responsive to feature requests in the Support tab. It has time-delimited income options so it seems straightforward to add time-delimited expenses

Unfortunately, I don’t have a tool suggestion. But I’d love to hear more about how you’re thinking about those funds specifically. Will you keep them in a separate account and choose a different investment strategy for those? Asking because I’m in a similar life situation, know I need to plan for this, but haven’t actually started planning. A lot of the FI content assumes that kids will be around to take care of their parents always happy to find more resources to help think through family situations that don’t involve kids.

Christie - You are not alone! I have a handful of friends all in a similar situation.

At present, I'm just trying to get my retirement accounts to my FI # and have that additional on top. So for clarity, it's all in one fund, trying to take advantage of compounding interest, until I reach that total I need for both. Then yes, once I retire, I likely will separate it into a different (unknown) account.

A well known financial journalist recommended I look into an annuity for it. My concern with that is not having a lump sum to potential buy into assisted living at some point in the future. And those lump sums can be LARGE. So an annuity's promise of lifetime monthly income doesn't help in this situation.

If I'm wrong about the annuity or am lacking important helpful information, I eagerly hope more people will reply!

I’m not super familiar with the FI tool so please excuse my pivot to a different tool, Boldin. I’m very familiar with Boldin and I can say that what you’re trying to accomplish can be done very effectively in Boldin. I’ve found that a lot of lite retirement planning tools are only good for getting a broad sense of how effective your retirement plan will be. Tools like Boldin and ProjectionLab go way beyond that, giving you the ability to get into the weeds of your plan and model the specific moves that can have a significant impact on your plan’s chance of success. If people have found that the FI Plan Tool goes head to head with Boldin in this regard, then I stand corrected in advance!

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if the free version could address this issue? As a good FI person, I'm trying to avoid more subscriptions!

You can check but I honestly don’t remember how functional the free version is. I get the impulse to save money, but you could also view Boldin as a very inexpensive alternative to paying someone for this kind of advice. You can also try to model your hypothetical plans in AI LLMs, but I’d recommend you have more than one LLM run through your plan to give you a broader view than one LLM. Finally, the cheap version of human assistance in this area is PlanVision. If you spend time hammering out your plan with Boldin and then want a qualified human to review it, planvision can do it for a few hundred bucks and you’ll have access to them for a year.
